As part of an evolving specialism in timber construction, DRUw is working with the Welsh timber industry to develop low-tech solutions promoting the use of homegrown timbers. These projects merge the traditions of local craft and material with national influences in economics and technology. This 4300x1000mm prototype ‘table’ demonstrates a solid timber panel structural system in the form of a generic building section, comprising two short walls and a roof – or two legs and a table top. Using short lengths and sections of Douglas fir, Sitka spruce or larch, the ‘table’ is bolted together across its width generating friction between lamellae eliminating the need for glue-lamination. Panels of stress-laminated timber can be manufactured using reclaimed and recycled timber and prefabricated as smaller components for ease of construction. In turn, the panels and/or lamellae can then be recycled in the future.
