Working closely with the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG), Registered Social Landlords and industry DRUw has been committed to research in Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and ‘carbon neutral’ social housing for several years. This model, illustrating 1 of 13 houses in Gorseinon, was developed as a rationalised construction method based on principles of shell, core and fit-out. The resultant form and dimensioning lends itself equally to timber panels, SIPS, steel volumetric and concrete panels, while responding to any environment, site and context in either narrow or wide aspect, 2 or 3-storey and 2, 3 and 4-bed. All designs are affordable, repeatable and aim for an Ecohomes ‘excellent’ or better and include a roof mounted ‘energy pack’ and a passive solar, south façade. This project is currently informing a WAG funded research project to appraise the state of MMC in Wales, for sites in Ebbw Vale, Cydweli, Llanelli and Cardiff.
